Spring Planting

Sowing seeds for spring planting starts in January.

It seems everything needs to be done at the same time. 

It’s organized chaos, as we’re filling trays with the right soil mix, sowing and labeling trays and keeping track of who needs warmth, who needs light and who wants to be moist and who doesn’t. 

Flats of seeds are kept protected and cared for in the green houses until they break through the soil.

Once the seedlings are of good size, they must be potted up into larger containers to grow on for awhile.

Most always its cold, sometimes its raining or snowing when it’s time to pot up the seedlings.

 

Sometimes this process happens twice or three times as the plants grow larger. Sometimes the weather cooperates and sometimes it doesn’t.

Eventually the young plants will start enjoying the warmth and sunshine and enjoy the spring weather.

The sun and wind is a great benefit as they grow and mature. From here they are ready to find new homes.

It’s tomato planting time!

We have a number of varieties and different size plants to suit most everyone. We have some very large mature plants that are ready now and could be planted straight into the garden or could be grown in a large container. We’d suggest at least a 5 gallon container. Don’t forget to make sure you have good drainage. Tomatoes do best with lots of sunshine!


We also have some medium size plants and some 6 packs that are raring to go.

The fun of making baskets is choosing the right plant combination, based on what is ready, and pairing it with the right basket to create a nice arrangement of flowers our customers will enjoy all season.

Some plants grow through the summer their first year and seldom bloom.

 


Here are a few of our favorites. 

They hang out in the green house all winter and become real show stoppers their second year.  A few may even go into their third year before they really become all they can be.  It’s worth the wait to see them in all their glory.  We are really looking forward to next years show.

 

We are very excited to have a Lupine in bloom this year.    Can you imagine what it will look like with several growing together?
