Plant Azaleas in the fall for spring blooms

Azaleas bloom profusely in spring (and sometimes rebloom in fall). They feature trumpet-shaped or funnel-shaped blossoms in shades of pink, red, purple and white, thriving best in partial shade and acidic, well-draining soil

The ideal planting window for Azaleas grown in this area (zone 7b) is fall (Mid-September to October). This gives the shrubs time to establish roots in the milder weather with less heat stress and while the soil is warm. 

 Quick Planting tips for Zone 7 b:   Pick a spot with filtered morning sun and afternoon shade.  Ensure soil is loose, rich, and highly acidic with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0.  Keep the top of the root ball slightly above the ground level, as azaleas have shallow roots that rot if buried too deep.  Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of pine straw or pine bark to keep roots moist and cool all season.

Coleus is a fun plant to grow

Coleus planters are a spectacular array of colors and patterns,
from lime green to deep reds and purple.

The colors are vibrant and the leaf patterns are very unique!

They show off their colors best when grown in the shade.
Pinch the tops if they start to get unruly and they will branch out and get fuller.

Coleus is an easy to care for plant and doesn’t require a lot of attention.
A little shade and regular watering and it will sit quietly and grow bigger and more beautiful every day.

It’s too hot to be outside digging in the dirt

and it’s too late in the season to be planting in the garden.

Here are two deck barrels we just finished recently. Both love the sun and are ready to move in. They would be happy with their own little sunny corner on the deck. All they need is water and sunshine.

The white petunia planters and hanging baskets would love to share the sunny space with the barrels. White petunias on a hot sunny day seems to make things feel cooler, certainly cheerier!

For a splash of color, there are bright colored  Joan Senior Daylilies and Echinacea Powwow’s  already potted up, just set them where you want them and don’t forget to water.

The Hydrangeas and Butterfly Bushes are in bloom and a good size to grow on a patio or deck.  They are also a bee and butterfly magnet.  Deadheading the Butterfly Bushes will encourage more blooms.

Hydrangeas liven up a shady corner of the deck

This weeks additions include Hydrangeas, Ideal growing conditions for hydrangeas include planting in rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture, typically favoring morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent wilting. They need 1-2 inches of water per week and protection from harsh winds. Ideal conditions involve moist, organic, slightly acidic soil to produce blue flowers, or alkaline for pink.
