Dahlias, Periwinkles, and Petunias
Dahlias, Periwinkles, and Petunias
These make a stunning, vibrant combination for flower beds or containers. They thrive in similar environments, but because of their different growth habits and water needs, they are best arranged using a balanced “Thriller, Filler, and Spiller” layout. The Thriller (Dahlia): Dahlias are tall, bold, and dramatic. Plant these as the central focal point in pots, or at the very back of a garden bed so they don’t block sunlight for the other plants. The Filler periwinkles (Vinca): Vincas provide compact, bushy fullness around the base of the dahlia. They grow upright, are incredibly heat-tolerant, and bring a continuous, solid block of color. The Spiller (Petunia): Petunias are excellent “fillers” and “spillers”. Plant them around the outer edges of the pot or in the front of the bed so their vines can spill over the edges, providing a lush, trailing effect.
